Calcium oxalate crystals in the lungs.
A 67-year-old man who had been prescribed prednisolone for 20 months consulted our department due to repeated episodes of pneumonia. Computed tomography showed a large cavity in the apex of the right lung (Picture A, arrow). A fungal culture of a sample aspirated from the cavity revealed black-colored colonies (Picture B), which were later confirmed to be Aspergillus niger. A Grocott’s methenam...
متن کاملCalcium Oxalate Crystals in Eucalypt Ectomycorrhizae: Morphochemical Characterization
Ectomycorrhizal fungi are ubiquitous in forest ecosystems, benefitting plants principally by increasing the uptake of water and nutrients such as calcium from the soil. Previous work has demonstrated accumulation of crystallites in eucalypt ectomycorrhizas, but detailed morphological and chemical characterization of these crystals has not been performed. In this work, cross sections of acetic a...
متن کاملCalcium oxalate crystals (Weddellite) within the secretions of ductal carcinoma in situ--a rare phenomenon.
A case is described in which calcium oxalate (Weddellite) crystals were identified in an area of ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast. Seventy other cases were examined but no evidence of Weddellite was detected. This is evidently a rare phenomenon in carcinoma in situ.
متن کاملCalcium oxalate crystals in the kidney and thyroid of leprosy patients.
The presence of calcium oxalate crysta.ls in the human kidney ,vas reported 111 1959 ( 15) . This was later follo'Ned by many studies in which the same kind ?f crystals were found in the human thYl:Old (17), retina oculi (5, 18), and myocardIUm ( 2). These ealciu m oxal ate crystals ha ~e been thought to have a different pathologIC meaning from crystal formation in primary oxalosis. There have ...
متن کاملCalcium oxalate crystals and oxalate induce an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in the proximal tubular epithelial cells: Contribution to oxalate kidney injury
TGF-β1 is the main mediator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Hyperoxaluria induces crystalluria, interstitial fibrosis, and progressive renal failure. This study analyzed whether hyperoxaluria is associated with TGF-β1 production and kidney fibrosis in mice and if oxalate or calcium oxalate (CaOx) could induce EMT in proximal tubule cells (HK2) and therefore contribute to the fibr...
